Antibiotics are a type of pharmaceuticals that kill bacteria.
Antibiotics are divided into a number of categories:[1]
- Aminoglycoside Antibiotics
- Cephalosporins
- Carbapenems
- Quinolone Antibiotics
- Macrolide Antibiotics
- Penicillins
- Sulfonamides
- Tetracycline Antibiotics
- Oxazolidinones
- Other Antibiotics (see below)
Other antibiotics, those that do not fall into one of the above categories, include the following drugs:[2]
- Clindamycin (Brand name: Cleocin)
- Metronidazole (Brand names: Flagyl, Helidac, Metizol, Metric 21, Metro Cream, Metrogel, Neo-Metric, Noritate, Novonidazol)
- Vancomycin (Brand name: Vancocin)
- Rifabutin (Brand name: Mycobutin)
- Rifampin (Brand name: Rifadin)
- Nitrofurantoin (Brand names: Furadantin, Macrobid, Macrodantin)
- Chloramphenicol (Brand name: Chloromycetin)
