U.S. President's Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief

"Through H.R. 5501, the Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act of 2008. the U.S. Government has expanded its commitment to PEPFAR through 2013. "The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) was launched in 2003 to combat global HIV/AIDS - the largest commitment by any nation to combat a single disease in history. The legislative authorization for the Emergency Plan is P.L. 108-25, the United States Leadership Against Global HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Act of 2003." [1]

"PEPFAR is overseen by the U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, who is appointed by the President, confirmed by the Senate, and reports directly to the Secretary of State, as established through PEPFAR’s authorizing legislation.6 The Coordinator, presently Deborah Birx, holds the rank of Ambassador and leads the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator (OGAC) at the Department of State. " [1]
