George Albee was a past president of the American Psychological Association and therefore a valuable ally of the tobacco industry in their backstage fight to stop nicotine "dependence" being classified as "addiction" rather than "habit-forming" This was essential if they were to maintain the pretence that smoking was a human-rights issue, and that "smokers choose to smoke."
He was a grantee of the CTR Special Projects who elected to be funded through the secret Special Projects #4 account. See CTR Special Projects

<b<1976 Jan "Clinical psychologists and psychiatric social workers are among those who charge that the [DSM] manual tends to look at every problem as organic, thus representing a power play by psychiatrists to preempt their territory.
"The advance intelligence on the DSM-111 reportedly has it turning every human problem into a disease, in anticipation of the shower of health-plan gold that is over the horizon," says George Albee. [2]

1982 Aug 31 The CTR statements for Special Projects #4 accounts shows that George Albee was on a six-monthly retainer (plus expenses ?) of $4,422. [3]
Court-declared list of scientists
Note: this is just a partial list of the scientists, academics and 'consultants' who were being paid via Special Project accounts. It deals only with the scientists known to the courts at the time it was compiled. Many other academics and professionals were paid via these accounts as revealed at later dates.
The Council of Tobacco Research (CTR) was a tobacco front group designed to promote the idea that science had not proven cigarettes were bad for your health. Those listed below were scientists funded by tobacco to confuse the scientific issues.
Grants made via the CTR's Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) may be legitimate (or not), but those made through the secret Special Account #4 were effectively bribes. |
