This stub is a work-in-progress by the ScienceCorruption.com journalists's group. We are indexing the millions of documents stored at the San Francisco Uni's Legacy Tobacco Archive [1] With some entries you'll need to go to this site and type into the Search panel a (multi-digit) Bates number. You can search on names for other documents also. Send any corrections or additions to editor@sciencecorruption.com

Alvan L Barach was a Clinical Professor of Medicine. College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia Uni, New York who was a tobacco industry helper. He was also a recipient of the CTR Special Projects #4 grants, who elected to be funded in secret. CTR Special Projects
Documents & Timeline
1964 Aug 12 The later science director of the CTR, Sheldon C Sommers was then the Associate Pathologist, Columbia University. He is on a panel set up for the CTR to examine the grant applications by William I Fishbein of the Chicago Board of Health. The panel is made up of Carl C Seltzer and five doctors (MDs), Ross L Mclean, L Henry Garland, Sheldon C Sommers, Alvan L Barach and Caroline Bedell Thomas. Fishbein plans to conduct autopsies on 200 geriatric patients and examine their lungs. [2]
1968 Aug An unidentified article on "emphysema diagnosis" with this date was later included in a list of "Recent Helpful Documents" in Leonard Zahn's files at the CTR. [3]
- [ Leonard Zahn and his wife Hilda ran a science reporting and recruiting business for the tobacco industry.]
1970 March 11 Alvan Barach has written to the editor of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). He complains that the media are constantly frightening the public with medical stories.
Emphysemia, he says, does not cause everyone to die of suffocation (In fact most die of heart failure!), and he suggests that they should recommend that smokers become "non-hinhalers" -- that they continue to smoke, but don't take it down into the lungs.[4]
- [He advised the tobacco industry that this letter had been accepted for publication in JAMA, which suggests that he was now providing services on request]
Court-declared list of scientists
Note: this is just a partial list of the scientists, academics and 'consultants' who were being paid via Special Project accounts. It deals only with the scientists known to the courts at the time it was compiled. Many other academics and professionals were paid via these accounts as revealed at later dates.
The Council of Tobacco Research (CTR) was a tobacco front group designed to promote the idea that science had not proven cigarettes were bad for your health. Those listed below were scientists funded by tobacco to confuse the scientific issues. Grants made via the CTR's Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) may be legitimate (or not), but those made through the secret Special Account #4 were effectively bribes. |
