Texans for Affordable and Reliable Power (TARP) is front group that emerged ahead of mid-December 2006 court hearings on a proposal by Dallas-based TXU and other energy companies, to build new coal-fired power plants in East Texas. The proposed plants are being opposed by environmental and other groups, including a coalition led by Dallas Mayor Laura Miller.
Ahead of the hearings Chuck McDonald from the PR firm McDonald Public Relations organized TARP with funding from TXU. "We have to do what Laura Miller has done," McDonald told the Dallas Morning News. [1]
TARP has been presented as having been launched by the mayors of Fairfield, Henderson, Mexia, Mount Pleasant, Savoy and Riesel in support of TXU's proposals for new power plants. [2] At the time of the hearing Fairfiled city Mayor, Roy Hill, told Associated Press that his groups would seek financial support from TXU. [3]
