Sir Simon Hornby "is the former Chairman of W H Smith Group plc. Simon has supported Build Africa since 1984, becoming a Patron in 1998." [1]

In 2001 "The founder and first Chairman of the National Literacy Trust, Sir Simon Hornby, has retired from the role and been succeeded by the Trust's Deputy Chairman, Baroness Prashar. Sir Simon will become the Trust's first President and will continue as a trustee." [2]
