Service for Peace
Service for Peace descibes itself as an "international not-for-profit organization that brings diverse groups together in service in order to cross barriers of race, religion, class, creed, or national origin, and address urgent social needs." [1]
In March 2006, Americans United for Separation of Church and State reported that "Service for Peace does not openly proclaim its ties to Moon. Its Web site contains no references to the Unification Church or Moon. However, obscuring ties to Moon is a common practice for the organizations he runs, and the group’s ties to the Unification Church are clear." [2] "According to publicly available records, " it continued, "the executive director of Service for Peace is Michael Balcomb, a long-time Moon operative, and the organization is frequently touted on Unification Web sites. Tax documents show that Service for Peace is affiliated with the Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles, a Moon group for college students founded in 1984."
In May 2007, Media Transparency's Bill Berkowitz reviewed the history of Service for Peace and its success in gaining an $80,000 grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service "to support projects across the country on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service." [3]
