Sanlam is South Africa's biggest insurer, was started in 1918. It invests some of the monthly insurance premiums paid by customers into the stock market. Its net income, excluding accounting adjustments, climbed to 4.45 billion rand ($600 million) in 2010 from 1.76 billion rand a year earlier.[1] [2]
