Peter R. Neumann
Peter R. Neumann, according to website of the Centre for Defence Studies (CDS) at King’s College London, states that he is the Director of the CDS. However, the website for the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation & Political Violence (ICSR) claims that Neumann was the Director of the CDS and is in fact the Director of the ICSR. [1] [2]
Prior to looking at Islamic terrorism, Neumann was involved as a radio journalist in Germany and wrote a biography of former US Vice-President Al Gore [3]
In his book on Al Gore, Neumann wrote about the final Democratic debate in 1988 in which Gore attacked his opponent, Governor Michael Dukakis, on his soft position about crime in the case of Willie Horton, a criminal in Dukakis' state of Massachusetts. According to Neumann, this became the main weapon in the hands of the Republican's and their candidate George Bush. [4]
Al Gore also served as army journalist in Vietnam from Christmas 1970 until May 1971. He once wrote an article about an attack by twelve Vietcong rebels, but Neumann asserts in his biography, that Gore was not even at the place where the attack took place. Neumann alleges Gore just questioned soldiers involved. [5]
Since then Neumann was involved in publishing books and articles on the Irish Republican Army(IRA). [6]
Neumann, is also Editor of terrorism.openDemocracy.net." [7]
Because of his mixed professional background, Neumann's expertise in al-Qaeda terrorism appears unclear.
"Dr. Neumann was the Academic Director of the Club de Madrid's International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security in Madrid in March 2005, and served as senior advisor to the National Policy Forum on Terrorism, Security and America's Purpose in the United States in 2005," a biographical note states. [8]
"He is the Director of the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence. Prior to this appointment, he was Director of the Centre for Defence Studies (2005-2007) at King's College London, and Content Director of the International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security (2004-2005) organized by the Club de Madrid, the association of former Presidents and Prime Ministers."
