Jillian Schwedler
Dr. Jillian Schwedler "is Assistant Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland at College Park. She received her PhD in Politics from New York University in September 2000. Dr. Schwedler's publications include three edited volumes, Understanding the Contemporary Middle East, 2nd ed., with Deborah J. Gerner (Lynne Rienner, 2004), Toward Civil Society in the Middle East? A Primer (Lynne Rienner, 1995), which she edited and for which she contributed the key article, and Islamist Movements in Jordan (Amman, 1997). Her articles have appeared in Journal of Democracy, Comparative Politics, Social Movement Studies, Journal of Palestine Studies, Middle East Report, and elsewhere, as well as in several edited volumes. Her book manuscript, Faith in Moderation: The Dynamics of Islamist Political Parties, is currently under review.
"Dr. Schwedler has received awards and fellowships from the Social Science Research Council, the Fulbright Foundation (twice), the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, the American Institute for Yemeni Studies, and the Law and Society Association. She has conducted extensive field research in Egypt, Jordan, and Yemen, and has traveled to Lebanon, Turkey, Qatar, Syria, Israel/Palestine, and more than two dozen countries outside the Middle East.
"Dr. Schwedler is currently Chair of the Board of Directors of the Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP), publishers of the quarterly journal Middle East Report. In 2002, she was elected Secretary of the Palestinian American Research Center (PARC). From 1991-1995, she was program officer for the Civil Society in the Middle East Project at New York University, which was funded by the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations.
"Dr. Schwedler's current research interests include protests and policing, political Islam, social movements, democracy and democratization, identity, political culture, and transnational public spheres. She was on leave from the University of Maryland as Senior Research Fellow of the Arab Archives Institute in Amman, Jordan, and as Visiting Scholar at New York University for 2003-2004." [1]
