Jeno C. A. Staehelin

Ambassador Jenö C.A. Staehelin, Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations.

"After having worked as clerk of a Zurich court and in a leading international law firm in Zurich, Mr. Staehelin entered the Swiss Foreign Service. Short stays in Bern, Geneva and Stockholm (1969 - 1971) were followed by an appointment (1971 - 1976) as one of several Legal Advisers to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a two years' stay with the Swiss Delegation to OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) in Paris (1976/77).

"End of 1977, Mr. Staehelin was appointed Vice President for Legal Affairs and International Relations of the European Patent Office in Munich, Germany. He occupied that function until 1984 when, back in the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he was nominated Minister and Deputy to the Director for International Organisations with particular responsabilities for UN-affairs. In 1987 he was appointed Ambassador in charge of European and North American Affairs. Concurrently, as of 1991, he acted as Ambassador on Special Mission to the Holy See. From April 1993 to June 1997, Mr. Staehelin was accredited as Ambassador of Switzerland to Japan. In June 1997 he was appointed Permanent Observer of Switzerland to the United Nations in New York with the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Upon admission of Switzerland to the United Nations in September 2002, Ambassador Staehelin was appointed Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the United Nations in New York, with the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary."
