International Peace Academy
International Peace Academy "(IPA) (became the International Peace Institute in early 2008) is an independent, international institution dedicated to promoting the prevention and settlement of armed conflicts between and within states through policy research and development.
- "IPA works closely with the United Nations, regional and other international organizations, governments, and nongovernmental organizations, as well as with parties to conflicts in selected cases. Its efforts are enhanced by its ability to draw on a worldwide network of government and business leaders, scholars, diplomats, military officers, and leaders of civil society.
- "IPA is a nonprofit organization governed by an international Board of Directors. The organization is funded by generous donations from governments, major philanthropic foundations, and corporate donors, as well as contributions from individuals and its Board members." [1]

History
"IPA was founded in 1970 by a group of individuals from within and outside of the United Nations who believed that a thoroughly independent institution, free from official constraints, could make a unique contribution to multilateral efforts to prevent and settle armed conflicts around the world. The principal inspiration came from then-UN Secretary-General U. Thant and from a deeply committed philanthropist, Ruth Forbes Young, a truly remarkable woman of our times.
"In turn, IPA’s founding president, Major General Indar Jit Rikhye, translated their collective vision into an organization with a significant role and a global reach. Under General Rikhye’s stewardship for twenty years, IPA concentrated its efforts on training of military and civilian professionals involved in peacekeeping, as well as selective facilitation efforts."
