David Thul from Owatonna, Minnesota, an Army Staff Sergeant in the Minnesota National Guard who recently returned from duty in Iraq, became the Minnesota chairman of Vets for Freedom (VFF) on August 2, 2007.[1]

On May 18, 2007, Free Republic reported[2] "SSGT Thul is currently serving with the 34th Infantry Division, conducting convoy operations in Iraq. He has received the Combat Infantry Badge and was recently extended 125 days in support of surge operations."

In May 2007, Thul and Navy Lt. Jason Nichols of Florida, then "both stationed in Iraq", organized the Appeal for Courage petition that was "signed by 2,755 current and former troops who say they believed full funding of the Iraq war is the only way to defeat terrorists and prevent them from attacking U.S. soil again." They "decided the petition was the best way to show congressional leaders that the Iraq war is the right fight and that the troops need Congress' support to complete their mission."[3]

The petition was "personally handed" to House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) by Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Executive Director Bob Wallace.[4]
