Barry Goldwater was the Republican Party's U.S. presidential candidate in 1964. He was a hard-right conservative from Arizona who won Ku Klux Klan endorsement for his racial views, and hawkish supporters for advocating the use of nuclear weapons. His campaign slogan was "In your heart, you know he's right" which was countered by his Democratic opponent, Lyndon Johnson, with "In your guts, you know he's nuts."
He eventually won only his home state of Arizona and five former Confederate states, whlle Johnston won a staggering 61.1 percent of the popular vote.
