Alan Charlton joined the Board of De Montfort University "in September 2013 and is also a member of the Audit Committee. Alan is a former British diplomat now with a number of roles in the public, private and third sectors. He is writing a book of Diplomatic Stories called "Shaking My Briefcase". He has lectured around the world.

"He served as the British Ambassador to Brazil between December 2008 and July 2013. This was the final stage of a career of 35 years in the Diplomatic Service, including postings in the United States and Germany as Deputy Ambassador. He served in Berlin before during and after the Fall of the Wall. He started as an Arabist, in the British Embassy to Jordan.

"In London, he worked on Africa and the Middle East and was closely involved in the diplomatic work to achieve a political settlement to end the war in Bosnia; he attended the Dayton Peace Talks in 1995. He was Foreign Office HR Director and Member of the Board of Management. He worked for two years as Deputy Chief of the Assessments Staff in the Cabinet Office.

"Alan was educated at Cambridge, Leicester and Manchester universities. He has degrees in modern languages and linguistics and a post-graduate certificate of education. Alan was appointed Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1996 and Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO) in 2007.[1]   Alan Charlton was a British diplomat for 35 years. He served as Ambassador to Brazil (2008-2013), Deputy Ambassador to the United States (2004-08) and to Germany (1998-2000). He was the British member of the Bosnia Contact Group and participated in the Dayton Bosnia peace Conference in 1995. He served in West Berlin before, during and after the fall of the Berlin Wall (1986-1990). He was earlier an Arabist, serving as First Secretary in Jordan and then on the Lebanon/Israel desk in the FCO and as Deputy Chief of the Cabinet Office Assessments Staff during the Iraq/Kuwait crisis of 1991.
