Walter Jacobson: Plaintiff
Biography
Chicago television anchor who said on 1981 news show that Brown & Williamson tried to lure children to smoke cigarettes. A jury later awarded Brown & Williamson $3 million in general damages and $2 million in punitive damages against Jacobson, which was affirmed on appeal. Jacobson was not allowed to call FTC employees who said Jacobson's comment fairly reflected the FTC's report about cigarette advertising (L. White, Merchants 1988).
