The US mission to Iraq will follow the Coalition Provisional Authority after having transferred limited sovereignty to the Iraqi Governing Council on June 30th 2004. However, US and UK troops will remain there as long as necessary along with forces from other nations to provide security to the Iraqi people until a well equipped police and military force are set up. The current American ambassador to the UN, John Negroponte, will be the first American ambassador to Iraq after the close of the first embassy in 1990 due to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. This new embassy will be the biggest American embassy in the world with 3000 or more US employees and is scheduled to open in July.
