Cllr Tony Jackson, Local Government Association. "Although born in Hillingdon (Middlesex) I spent most of my early years growing up in South Wales. In 1972 I moved to London to take up a position as a Trainee Management Accountant with Lyons Maid Ltd (part of the J Lyons Group), leaving in 1978 to join Highland Leasing Ltd (part of the Barclays Bank Group) as Management Accountant and then a year later taking on the role of Company Accountant.

"In 1984, after becoming a licensed trainer for the international Dale Carnegie Organisation, I established my own business as a Training Consultant, which I still operate. Throughout the years I have worked with organisations ranging in size from SMEs to large multi-national companies, helping them focus on skills development in areas such as general management, presentation, team development and customer service.

"I became actively involved in local politics in 1996 when I joined the local Conservative Association branch in Datchworth. After a year I took over as Chairman of that branch. In 1999 I stood for election as a Conservative candidate for the ward of Datchworth & Aston, a ward held for the previous 24 years by an Independent councillor. My share of the vote increased in the elections of 2003, 2007 and 2011.

"At the start of the new political arrangements for local councils (2001/02) I was invited to join the Executive as portfolio holder with responsibility for Finance and Economic Development. In 2006 I took on the additional responsibility of Deputy Leader. In March 2007 I became Leader of the Conservative Group at East Herts and led them through the May 2007 elections, increasing our majority by one seat to 42 and in 2011 increased the majority further to 46 (out of 50).

"Currently I am Chairman of the East of England LGA, a member of the District Councils’ Network Executive, a member of the LGA Improvement and Innovation Board and a Vice-Chairman of the LGiU. I am also a Member Development Charter assessor accredited by South East Employers.

"I live in Datchworth with my wife Janet and we have son, Matthew, who is studying music at Leeds University." [1]
