Thomas J. Usher

Thomas J. Usher "is chairman of the board of directors of United States Steel Corporation.

"Mr. Usher had served as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of USX Corporation until year-end 2001, when USX spun off its wholly owned subsidiary, United States Steel Corporation. USX subsequently changed its name to Marathon Oil Corporation.

"A native of Reading, Pa., Mr. Usher holds three degrees, all from the University of Pittsburgh: a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering; a master's degree in operations research; and a doctorate in systems engineering...

"In 1986, Mr. Usher was named executive vice president-heavy products. He was appointed president of the steel division and joined the USX Corporation corporate policy committee in 1990. He was elected president of U. S. Steel and to the USX board of directors in 1991, president and chief operating officer of USX in 1994, and the following year, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of USX. He served in that capacity until the year-end 2001 spin-off of U. S. Steel, when he assumed the role of chairman, chief executive officer and president of U. S. Steel. From 2003 until 2004, he served as chairman and chief executive officer.

"Mr. Usher retired as chief executive officer in September 2004, but will continue to serve as chairman of the board of directors.

"In 2003, Mr. Usher received the 2002 Steelmaker of the Year Award from the Iron & Steel Society in honor of his innovative and successful leadership.

"Mr. Usher is chairman of the board of directors of Marathon Oil Corporation and serves on the board of directors of H. J. Heinz Company, PPG Industries, and PNC Financial Services Group. Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Pittsburgh, and serves on the board of directors of the Boy Scouts of America and The Extra Mile Education Foundation."
