Most Reverend Theodore Edgar McCarrick "was named the Fourth Archbishop of Newark, New Jersey, in 1986. The National Conference of Catholic Bishops elected Archbishop McCarrick to head its Committee on Migration in 1986 and in 1992. In 1992, he was also named to head the Committee for Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, and was elected in 1996 as Chair of the Committee on International Policy. He was elected one of l5 U.S. bishops to serve as a member of the Synod for America held in 1997. At the conclusion of that Synod, the bishops elected him to serve on the Post Synodal Council. In November 1996, Archbishop McCarrick was invited to serve on the Secretary of State’s Advisory Committee on Religious Freedom." [1]
