Overview
"The Virginia Institute for Defense and Homeland Security (IDHS) is a university and industry research consortium dedicated to delivering solutions that support the United States' homeland security and defense objectives. IDHS will provide research, prototype and technology transfer solutions in significantly less time with more commercialization by:
- Uniting multiple world-class centers for complex research initiatives
- Co-locating prototyping facilities with agency evaluation locations
- Educating the next generation of federal defense and security workers
History
"Recommendations for a consortium for research and development activities related to homeland security emerged from the Secure Virginia Initiative Panel[2] in early fall 2002. Plans for the Virginia IDHS were developed in September 2002 by the Virginia Research & Technology Advisory Commission[3], a 29-member panel established to advise the Governor on research and technology strategies for the Commonwealth and make policy recommendations to enhance the global competitive advantage of research institutions and technology-based commercial endeavors.
"The Virginia IDHS was established under the direction of Secretary of Technology George C. Newstrom, in conjunction with Secretary of Education Belle S. Wheelan, Secretary of Commerce and Trade Michael J. Schewel, and Assistant to the Governor for Commonwealth Preparedness John H. Hager, who leads the Secure Virginia Initiative Panel.
"An Executive Steering Committee representing academia, industry and federal and state government will formally establish the consortium's vision and policies. Funding for the institute will come from the federal government, participating universities, industry partners and Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology(CIT)[4]. The Virginia IDHS will initially reside at CIT's headquarters in Herndon."
