Talk:Articles on coal
Contents
Introduction
This page is a general to-do list and a way of keeping track of ongoing projects by the CoalSwarm team. Others are welcome to jump in as well -- contact ted@tednace.com for help on getting started.
Routine Updating
The following pages need to be updated with more recent data. Please initial and date if you've updated a page, e.g. TN 8/11
- Global use and production of coal -
- Coal-fired power plant capacity and generation - TN 5/11
- Coal and jobs in the United States - click on footnotes for sources; 2009 jobs data is now available
- Comparative electrical generation costs
- EPA Coal Plant Settlements - JF/5/11 (added TVA settlement)
- Existing U.S. Coal Plants
- Capacity factor table - TN 7/11
- State-by-State Capacity and Output
- Coal plants cancelled in 2011
- Coal exports - needs general updating and needs a table
- Coal reserves - needs new figures from "Survey of Energy Resources," World Energy Council Nov 2010
Major Projects
Victories (International)
- Need a page listing successful coal plant and coal mine fights outside the U.S. Examples:
- Defeat of Golden Triangle Hydro Electric Power Pte Ltd 12 MW coal-fired power plant in Burma in April 2001 (see Poison Clouds, page 46
Thailand and Burma
- Important story here: Thailand to Build Coal-Fired Power Plant in Burma

India and coal
More plants need pages. See table on Proposed coal plants in India. Many of these are KSK plants -- info from http://www.ksk.co.in/opr-evl-tp.html
There are a number of Wikipedia pages that can be adapted into CoalSwarm and then enhanced. Remember to add the {{Wikipedia}} marker at the bottom of the first posting of the page onto CoalSwarm to show the attribution of the page:
- Super thermal power station (Wikipedia)
- Category: Power stations in India (Wikipedia)
- Category: Electric power in India (Wikipedia)
- Category: Power companies of India (Wikipedia)
- State power agencies of India (Wikipedia)
- List of power stations in India (Wikipedia)
Phulbari coal mine
Description: The Phulbari mine has been the site of a major controversy over the past five years, including demonstrations involving 50,000 people, killing of three demonstrators and wounding of hundreds of others, disclosures by WikiLeaks of U.S. involvement in restarting the project, and involvement by the U.S. hedge fund owner Christian Leone. The Talk:Bangladesh and coal page has numerous links about the Phulbari Coal Project. In addition, there are numerous links on the website of the International Accountability Project.
Adding videos to coal activist video and state pages
- This project involves opening up the coal activist video pages found on Coal Activist Videos, deleting any inoperative videos, increasing the size to 300, adding new videos, and cross-posting as appropriate onto other pages such as state, company, and mine pages. The goal is to increase multimedia content generally across a range of CoalSwarm pages. Please list pages completed:
- Nace -
- Shearer - I did this a few months back and tried to add the applicable videos to all the relevant pages: state, company, plant, etc. I don't remember exactly which ones, but at the time I went through all the videos and drew on the ones I thought were best.
- Frank - continuing to this for pages I manage... Also working on formatting them so they are consistent and fit the page well.
- Burton -
Northwest coal exports
Description: This project involves making sure that we have pages on all the existing and proposed rail lines, port facilities, companies, regulatory authorities, etc. that will be involved in the push to expand exports of coal from the Powder River Basin. An important paper to look at is "Exporting Powder River Basin Coal: Risks and Costs by the Western Organization of Resource Councils. Include Norfolk Southern and Peabody Energy, if relevant.
High traffic pages
The following pages get a lot of visitors, so they should be kept up-to-date, with plenty of links to other pages:
- Existing U.S. Coal Plants - 103,274 page views (5/10), 195,852 page views (3/11), 284,268 page views (12/11)

Articles that need work
- U.S. Social Forum and coal, World Social Forum and coal
- Blogs about coal
- Books about coal and Documentaries about coal - These pages have now been created but more could be added. There are many books and movies about the labor wars in the coal fields, for example. And there are many classics that are now out of print and deserve recognition -- maybe it's time for some of the books to be republished or released as PDFs. Many documentaries about coal are slightly obscure, so it would helpful to get a list all in one place and find out which ones are the best.
- Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck
- Bruce Mansfield Power Station - add "black rain" story
- Canada and coal - We need to create pages for all the power plants and companies shown here. (Note: all the Canadian power plants have Wikipedia pages) Also, we should create a page on Canada's coal phase-out
- Carbon Capture and Storage in Canada - blank
- Carbon Capture and Storage in India - blank
- Carbon Capture and Storage in the United Kingdom - blank
- China and coal - This page needs to be upgraded considerably, and sub-topic pages need to be created
- Chromium and coal - Create this page by copying SourceWatch's Chromium page. Then add a section on the Chromium-6 study. Also, add the table from "EPA’s Blind Spot: Hexavalent Chromium in Coal Ash" to the page.
- Coal facts & figures - This article could provide some basic information on production, number of mines, number of plants, etc. It could also guide people to the available sources of data online like the Energy Information Agency, the Dirty Kilowatts study, CARMA, and Followthecoalmoney.org.
- Coal plant financing - Matt Leonard talked about writing a primer on how coal plants are financed. We need something to introduce people to the basics.
- Coal-related photo and video collections - Need to expand this page
- Coal reserves - 7,724 page views (5/10). 12,387 views (3/11). Add info from Heinberg's book Blackout and from the new Rutledge study and other new studies.
- Coal Studies - Here's a good page to work on if you have limited time. The number of studies is really big, and the main service provided by this page is to list them all in one place and categorize them by topic.
- Comparative electrical generating costs -- need to add updated info from "Updated Capital Cost Estimates for Electricity Generation Plants," U.S. Energy Information Administration, November 2010
- Data sources on coal (United States) -- needs to be expanded by adding things like Dirty Kilowatts, CARMA, and Followthecoalmoney.org
- Federal coal leasing - This is an important topic, especially in the Powder River Basin that accounts for nearly 40% of U.S. production and is almost federal coal leases. These leases are historically very cheap and are an overlooked public policy handle.
- Feed-in tariff - needs to be expanded.
- Former coal plants - needs more pictures
- - Need to add him and other mining executives to Key Private Sector Decision Makers on Coal
- Global warming, Climate impacts of coal plants, Climate change - All of these pages are out of date, and they need more coal-specific info. The coal-related information on all three can be the same. There needs to an explanation of James Hansen's coal-centric climate strategy.
- Green the Capitol Initiative – 252 views - stub
- Hazardous air pollutants and coal - need a page, including the EPA's proposed NESHAPS regulations (http://www.epa.gov/apti/course422/apc4e.html) and this study: C.B. Szpunar, "Air Toxic Emissions from the Combustion of Coal: Identifying and Quantifying Hazardous Air Pollutants from U.S. Coals," U.S. Department of Energy, ANL/EAIS/TM-83, September 1992
- Historic coal production - create a page containing the EIA table.
- India and coal - This is another really important article. Needs more details on just about everything. Google Jeff Biggers coal India for a series of interesting new articles.
- Indonesia and coal - lots of information in the report "Indonesia's Coal"
- Infoboxes - A lot of power companies and coal mining companies lack infoboxes. These are easy to create once you get the hang of it.
- International Information on Coal - 3,690 page views (5/10)
- International opposition to coal - This page would have a brief paragraph and link to opposition in all the countries where it is taking place; also International protests against coal and Indigenous opposition against coal
- Key private sector decision makers on coal needs to be expanded to also include mining company executives such as Chris Cline and Rinat Akhmetov. Also, the stubs created for the executives on the list need to be expanded.
- Mercury and coal - 3,216 page views (5/10) - We should add a sortable table based on Table 1: Top 50 US Power Plant Mercury Emitters found in this EIP study
- Need a page on Multinational ownership of coal mines
- Mountaintop removal – 5,443 page views (9/9). 9,741 page views (5/10). 15,040 page views (3/11). This is already a strong article, but it might benefit from the additional of a Navbar that points and integrates the various related topics. See the article Clean Coal for an example of the Navbar approach.
- Natural gas as an alternative to coal - Need to add new findings by Drew Shinell of NASA's Goddard Center revising the GHG potency of methane from 25 x CO2 to 34 x CO2 on a 100-year basis. The same information also should be included in other articles having to do with natural gas (i.e. methane). Also, the GHG potency of methane deserves its own page. Related articles include Fracking, Marcellus Shale, and Natural gas transmission leakage rates. There are also recent articles raising questions about the lack of analysis of lifecycle greenhouse gas impacts of natural gas.
- Nonviolent direct actions against coal - 6,050 page views (5/10). This page and the yearly pages connected to it are always in need of updating, since actions are taking place regularly around the world.
- North American Coal - need to merge with North American Coal Corporation
- Opposition to existing coal plants - Needs more detail on specific fights
- Pakistan and coal - Needs work. Pakistan has huge coal reserves and we definitely need a strong article.
- Pennsylvania and coal - copy the subhead and paragraph about the 2010 Pennsylvania Post-Gazette report on air pollution and disease into each of the existing Pennsylvania coal plant pages.
- Philanthropy and the No-Coal Movement - This article is a good start but it needs more foundations and those foundations each need research.
- Philippines and coal - add more on protests
- Raven Underground Coal Project is a proposed mine that is in the middle of a significant controversy in British Columbia. We need to create a page for this and update the Canada and coal and Coal Activist Videos: Canada -- see BC's Raven Coal Mine Project
- Rural Utilities Service
- State coal subsidies – 935 views – needs work and linking to State-funded coal marketing programs
- State-funded coal marketing programs – 884 views – only covers ND and IL
- Sulfur dioxide and coal – 4,615 page views (9/9). 8,841 page views (5/10) Needs to explain how sulfur dioxide leads to the formation of particulates, and what the effect is on mortality/morbidity (e.g. Abt study by the CATF). Needs to include a sharper explanation and critique of sulfur trading programs. Also needs clearer numbers on how many power plants have not yet been retrofitted and when these plants will be required to be retrofitted under the Clean Air Act. Also needs to explain how SO2 forms particulates and leads to 24,000 annual deaths from particulates. Merge Sulphur and coal into this page and create a redirect.
- Testimony on proposed coal plants - This is a popular page (2,450) and it could be expanded significantly
- Twilight MTR Surface Mine - need to add protests and photos
- TXU deal - This was an important agreement between TXU (now Luminant), NRDC, and EDF that resulted in 8 proposed coal plants being cancelled and 3 moving forward. What were the terms of the agreement? How well is it being enforced? Was it a good deal or not? Whatever gets written can be copied into the Texas and coal, the Luminant, the Environmental Defense Fund]], and the NRDC articles, along with the articles on the 11 individual plants.
- United Kingdom and coal - The status of proposed coal plants is out of date.
- U.S. coal politics – 2,999 page views (9/09), 4,717 page views (5/10), 6163 page vies (3/11) – needs updating, but considering how much research this will require and how many page views it is getting, this may not be as high a priority as heavily trafficked pages.
- U.S. coal industry lobbyists 2008 - 629 views – This page is complete, but more pages need to be built about the various lobbying firms listed here.
- U.S. power company and utility lobbyists 2008 and 2009 – 647 views (9/09), 1,513 page views (5/10) – This page is complete, but the project connected with it(SourceWatch:Project:Creating Articles on U.S. power company and utility lobbyists 2008 and 2009) needs more work
- Vattenfall - add direct action protests
- Venezuela and coal - need section on coal opposition by Wayuu people, including appeals at 2006 U.S. Social Forum
- Waste coal - (not to be confused with Coal waste - needs expanding
- West Coast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership
- Wikipedia articles on coal - This is a useful resource that could be expanded
Complete; just need normal updating
- Environmental justice and coal – 1,140 page views (9/09), 2,206 page views (5/10). This page is good and we should continue to build it as items appear.
- Journalists covering coal - This is a very popular page that needs constant expanding. Anyone who just has a small amount of time can always google for coal articles and then post the journalists here. The hardest part is usually finding an email address for a journalist. (Remember to hide the address from Internet bots by replace the "@" with the word "AT".
- Public polling on coal and alternatives – 780 page views (5/09), 1,608 page views (5/10)– This page has a lot of information but for some reason doesn’t get much traffic.
- Obama administration actions on coal – 743 page views (9/09), 2,012 page views (5/10)
High-traffic general pages
Pages with more than 10,000 page views
These pages should receive the most frequent attention aimed at increasing usefulness, completeness, and links to other pages.
- Global warming - 193,887 page views (5/10)
- Existing U.S. Coal Plants - 103,274 page views (5/10), 195,852 page views (3/1/11), 229,861 (5/5/11)

- Carbon Capture and Storage - 15,506 page views (5/10)
- Coal phase-out - 13,548 page views (5/10). It would be helpful to know how many coal plants are expected to be phased out in the coming decades under a "business as usual" scenario either from (1) obsolescence or (2) application of existing air pollution standards. The people who produce the "Dirty Kilowatts" database may know this; also the Clean Air Taskforce.

- Sulfur dioxide and coal - 8,841 page views (5/10)
- Coal Issues Calendar - 8,525 page views (5/10) - This is a very time-intensive page relative to the number of views. Might make sense reconsidering how to keep it up-to-date.
- Coal moratorium - 8,262 page views (5/10)
- Coal plant conversion projects - 8,066 page views (5/10)
- Clean Air Act - 7,951 page views (5/10) - This needs to be consolidated with Clean Air Act (1970) and Clean Air Act (1990) into a Clean Air Act and coal article

- Powder River Basin - 6,913 page views (5/10)
- Clean Coal Technology - 6,905 page views (5/10)
- Global Warming Cost website - 6,652 page views (5/10)
- Bonner & Associates – 4,945 views (9/09), 6,639 page views (5/10) – This is the PR firm caught forging letters to Congress. We need to continue to follow this scandal

- China and coal - 5,718 page views (5/10). This page could be expanded in any number of ways. More should be said about coal reserves in China, which appear to be more limited than previously thought (see Coal reserves). It would also be helpful to get better numbers on what the actual production, use, and importing of coal has been in China. Finally, we still don't have any sort of list of existing or proposed coal plants in China.

- Marcellus Shale - 4,789 page views (5/10)
- Climate impacts of coal plants - 4,746 page views (5/10)
- Carbon trading - 4,683 page views (5/10). A closely related issue to carbon trading is Sulfur trading, which is frequently cited as an example of how pollution trading can be effective. Some critics of carbon trading have challenged that version of history, noting that sulfur pollution remains high and that most of the credit for those reductions that have happened belongs not to sulfur trading but to other measures. This would be a very interesting story to sort out.
