Ties to the American Legislative Exchange Council
BHFS co-chairs the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) Energy, Environment and Agriculture Task Force. Martin Shultz, Senior Policy Director in the firm's Phoenix office and a member of the BHFS Government Relations group, is BHFS' representative on the Energy, Environment and Agriculture Task Force, as of 2011.[5][6] (Shultz is also listed as VP of Government Affairs at Pinnacle West Capital Corporation, also an ALEC member).[7][8]
About ALEC |
---|
ALEC is a corporate bill mill. It is not just a lobby or a front group; it is much more powerful than that. Through ALEC, corporations hand state legislators their wishlists to benefit their bottom line. Corporations fund almost all of ALEC's operations. They pay for a seat on ALEC task forces where corporate lobbyists and special interest reps vote with elected officials to approve “model” bills. The Post reports that "one narrow niche the firm has carved out is in the area of the interchange fees charged on credit and debit card transactions. The Electronic Payments Association and Discover Financial Services are clients.[3]
The firm also represented Western Union in an effort to help defeat a Senate proposal requiring money-transfer firms to post currency exchange rates.[3]
Former Vail Resorts owner Apollo Advisors, the private equity firm run by Leon Black, has been Brownstein Hyatt's largest lobbying client since 2008, spending $2.6 million with the firm in 2009.[3]
