"Professor TK Oommen is arguably India’s most prominent sociologist. His intellectual contribution to the nation has won him a host of awards, including Padma Bhushan for services in higher education.

"He is widely credited with putting Indian sociology on the world map after becoming Secretary General of the International Sociological Association (1990-1994). He was the only scholar from Asia and Africa to be elected President of this organisation, which is sponsored by UNESCO and has existed for 60 years.

"Professor Oommen was chair of the Programme Advisory Committee of Gujarat Harmony Project (2002-2004). This led to the publication of his celebrated work ‘Civil Society Intervention in post-Godhra Gujarat: Reconciliation from Below.’ More than 20 other books have been published in his name.

"He is also a member of Prime Minister’s High Level Committee for the preparation of the Report on the Social, Economic and Educational Status of the Muslim Community in India. "[1]
