Sunoco is a large U.S. oil company headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It operates five refineries and has over 5,000 miles of pipeline. Brands are Sunoco, Ultra Service Centers, and APlus convenience stores. The company also makes chemicals and mines coal for coke processing. [1]

In June 2010, Sunoco said it plans to break off its coal-producing unit, SunCoke Energy, from the company early 2011 to focus on its transportation fuel and oil processing business. The coal unit has facilities in Virginia, Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois capable of producing 3.7 million tons annually of coking coal. It is also the operator of a facility in Brazil that produces 1.7 million tons annually. Its coal business earned $180 million in 2009 on revenue of $1.12 billion. The company said it is reviewing options for how the breakup will occur, including a spinoff to Sunoco shareholders. The move follows the refiner's $350 million sale of its chemicals business in early 2010 to Brazil's Braskem SA.[2]

Political contributions

Sunoco is one of the largest energy company contributors to both Republican and Democratic candidates for Congress. These contributions total $332,050 to the 110th US Congress (as of the third quarter), the largest of which has been to Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) for $10,000. Rep. Dingell, for his part, has been a strong supporter of the oil industry on energy, war and climate bills.[1]

Contributions like this from fossil fuel companies to members of Congress are often seen as a political barrier to pursuing clean energy.

Sunoco gave $249,500 to federal candidates in the 2006 election through its political action committee - 29% to Democrats and 71% to Republicans. [3]

Lobbying

The company spent $780,000 for lobbying in the first half of 2007. Seven lobbying firms were used including Podesta Group and Williams & Jensen. [4]
