Stop Islamization of America
Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) is an anti-Islam organization run by Pamela Geller of Atlas Shrugs and Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch. The SIOA was recently classified as a "hate group" by the Southern Poverty Law Center for its promotion of "a conspiratorial anti-Muslim agenda." [1]
Notable Activities
A June 6, 2010 rally in New York City drew 500 to protest the building of the Cordoba House mosque by Feisal Abdul Rauf two blocks away from the former site of the World Trade Center. A large number of protesters harassed two Coptic Christian men who had come to join the protest, and the two Christians had to be rescued by police. [2]
In April and May of 2010, SIOA funded "Leaving Islam?" bus advertisements in Miami and New York City. The banners, which parodied pro-Islam ads by the Islamic Circle of North America [3], purported to offer advice to Muslims considering conversion but fearing for their lives if they did convert. Miami canceled the ads, but restored them after SIOA threatened the city with a lawsuit. [4] The city of Detroit refused to run the ads and was sued by SIOA in late May 2010. [5]
