The Southern Waste Strategy Authority (SWSA) was created in 2001 by twelve southern Tasmanian local councils to facilitate better waste management for southern Tasmanians.

The authority has a close relationship with the Beverage Industry Environment Council. BIEC provides funding for an anti-litter television campaign with the slogan Don't Waste Tasmania. BIEC also funds a public place recycling program and a major events recycling program. BIEC-designed signage appears on a large proportion of rubbish and recycling bins across Tasmania.

The authority is opposed to a waste levies, container deposit legislation and plastic bag levies.
