"Sir John was UK ambassador to Japan from 1992 to 1996 and since retiring from the Foreign Office has continued to play a prominent role in public life, including serving as Chairman of the British Museum and Master of Churchill College, Cambridge University. He currently chairs the Needham Research Institute in Cambridge, specializing in the history of East Asian science. In 2007, he received from the Emperor of Japan the Grand Cordon of the Rising Sun in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the promotion of friendship, as well as academic and cultural exchange, between Japan and the UK" [1]
