California Sierra Pacific settlement
Sierra Pacific Industries "paid $13 million to settle allegations of air quality violations at four of the company's Sierra foothills sites," according to an August 2007 press release. [2]
"The California Air Resources Board, in cooperation with the California Attorney General and the Placer County Air Pollution Control District, jointly investigated the alleged violations against Sierra Pacific, and then filed a civil complaint in 2004. The complaint alleged failure to comply with air pollution control regulations at some Sierra Pacific sawmills and wood-fired boilers located in Lincoln, Quincy, Loyalton and Susanville (now closed)." [3]
Complaints in the case included: [4]
- Falsification of emission reports as a result of operator tampering with monitoring equipment;
- Failure to report emissions above allowable limits;
- Exceeding numerous permit emission limits over several years;
- Failure to operate and maintain air pollution control equipment; and,
- Discharging soot from the Lincoln facility that caused nuisances to nearby residences.
Environmental campaigns
ForestEthics, a non-profit environmental organization, has launched the Save The Sierra Campaign which demands that SPI: [5]
- Identify and protect Endangered Forests within all of their logging tenure, including the Sierra Nevada.
- Stop all clear-cut type logging
- Get Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification, the only credible standard for sustainable logging.
Political Contributions
Opensecrets.org lists SPI as having made two political contributions. [6] These were:
- $2,500 on November 1, 2000 to the National Republican Congressional Committee (Non-Federal);
- $1,500 on November 12, 1997 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee Non-Federal.
