Secession

Secession is the "declaration of sovereignty" by some region or group, e.g. urban secession of a city from the control of its surrounding region as in Singapore or the Special Administrative Region status (SARs) of Hong Kong. Usually this is seen as the opposite of imperialism in politics.

Current secession issues are Quebec within Canada (or not), Toronto within Ontario (or not), Kurdistan as defined as part of Iraq or including parts of present Turkey, Iran and Syria, and the West Bank and Gaza occupied by Israel.
