The Sasakawa Peace Foundation was formed in 1986 "to contribute to the welfare of humankind and the sound development of the international community, and thus to world peace, by conducting activities fostering international understanding, exchange, and cooperation, as well as efforts to promote these activities." [1]
According to a website funded by the foundation "Ironically [the] foundation is funded by a fortune left behind by Ryoichi Sasakawa, a convicted Japanese war criminal and right-wing philanthropist who built a shipbuilding empire after World War II." [2]funding
