Reza Fakhari

Reza Fakhari "is Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Professor of Political Science at Kingsborough Community College of The City University of New York. Professor Fakhari holds a Ph.D., with honors, in International Relations from the New School for Social Research in New York City. His doctoral dissertation dealt with the emergence of Mikhail S. Gorbachev in the Soviet Union and his key role in ending the Cold War. Before joining Kingsborough on August 1, 2005, Dr. Fakhari served as an Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and a Professor at LaGuardia Community College of The City University of New York. He has also been an adjunct professor of International Politics at Fordham University in New York since 1985 and has taught at Vassar College and the International Pacific College in New Zealand.

"Dr. Fakhari was the Scholar-in-Residence for the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society/New York Region in 2001-02. He is Academic Advisor and a member of Board of Directors for the Student World Assembly, a student-based non-partisan, no-governmental organization devoted to promoting global democracy. He was the Co-Founder and Vice President of the Islamic Institute for Human Rights, a non-governmental global dialogue organization engaged in reconciling Islam with Democracy. He has lectured widely on Islam and the Middle East in the U.S. and abroad and has appeared on TV and radio. His research interests include globalization and its discontents, the United Nations, and the changing U.S. role in the world in the post-9/11 international system.

"Dr. Fakhari was awarded a 2004-05 NAFSA: Association of International Educators grant to implement a "Global Civic Education" project involving Model U.N. Simulated online/videoconferencing activities between LaGuardia and the International Pacific College in New Zealand and to prepare a diverse delegation of students to participate in the National Model UN Conference in New York in March 2005. He was an invited faculty presenter in July 2004 in the prestigious Salzburg Seminar on "How to promote Globalism Among Students," with the Student World Assembly and the NAFSA Global Civic Education project being the two case studies.

"Dr. Fakhari was director of the e-Transfer Project, a 3-year, $600,000, FIPSE federal grant awarded to LaGuardia to implement a multifaceted program designed to bolster student retention, graduation and transfer rates by engaging them in faculty-led Virtual Interest Groups (VIGs) placed on Blackboard."
