Makarechian is a graduate from the University of California, Santa Barbara with degrees in finance and accounting.

"A participant and Board Member of several charitable, social and educational institutions, Paul is an active member of the California Coast Chapter of the Young President's Organization, where he has served as the Chapter Chairman and currently serves as the Regional Networks Officer for the YPO/WPO Executive Committee. He is a founding Board Member and Chairman of Gen Next and is a founding Board Member of Miocean, an Orange County-based nonprofit environmental organization. He has served on the Board of Trustees for South Coast Repertory and on the Board of Governors for Chapman University. He is also an active member of the Urban Land Institute. In addition, he served as a member of the National Advisory Council for the Small Business Administration by Presidential appointment."
