Pamela Allen was a Senior Reproduction Toxicologist at the Research and Consulting Company AG (RCC), in Switzerland. Formerly she had held similar positions at Smith, Kline & French Research Ltd., UK, and Beecham Pharmaceuticals Research Division.
Also at SKF Research were George Leslie and Graham Betton, who along with Allen, later formed the second tobacco industry WhiteCoats organisation known in the UK as Associates for Research on Indoor Air or ARIA.
Members of this group claimed to be 'independent scientists' expressing their own opinions, but in fact they were undercover lobbyists who needed to be trained in the basic science of Indoor Air Quality determination and the problems of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS).
They were actually disinformation experts and scientific influence-peddlers for the tobacco industry who were paid to attend and speak at scientific meetings, conferences, media briefings, and appear as well-paid witnesses in legal cases.
The tobacco industry created a number of these fake scientific associations in different regions (initially Philip Morris) with the help of law-firm Covington & Burling and the scientific recruiting agency, the Weinberg Group. ARIA provide these contracted ETS scientists (called WhiteCoats) with credibility and cover.

The organisational name implied a true research association with interests much wider than just passive smoking problems which took the focus of suspicion from tobacco. The member often joined forces to peer-review each other's studies, and the organisation sometimes laundered payments to the individual members. It was run by George B Leslie, and Professor Roger Perry of Imperial College London.
