The National Retail Federation describes itself as "the world’s largest retail trade association, representing discount and department stores, home goods and specialty stores, Main Street merchants, grocers, wholesalers, chain restaurants and Internet retailers from the United States and more than 45 countries" and states its mission as "to advance the interests of the retail industry through advocacy, communications and education."[1]


According to its 2012 IRS Form 990, the NRF had $35.5 million in revenue, spent $31.5 million, and ended the year with $58.2 million in assets.[2]

The NRF spent $3.51 million on lobbying in 2012 and $2.21 million in 2013.[3]

Opposition to Minimum Wage Increase

In May 2014, NRF lobbyist David French said that the minimum wage proposal "is thoroughly a political exercise and our goal is to create a strong economy across the entire industry. Our concern with the minimum wage increase at this time is it didn't meet that standard."[4] During the first three months of the year, the NRF has spent $1 million lobbying Congress on the minimum wage and other issues, which is 50% more than the $640,000 they spent during the same period last year.
