"Founded in 1948 to back the Progressive Party presidential bid of Henry Wallace, the Guardian offered comprehensive, professionally written news from a left-liberal perspective. Editor James Aronson had worked for the New York Times, and his cofounders, Cecil Belfridge and James McManus, were also long-time pros. The paper published stories on race relations by W. E. B. DuBois and foreign affairs by correspondents Anna Louise Strong and Wilfred Burchett. The National Guardian also spearheaded the doomed international campaign to save the Rosenbergs in the early fifties."
