Narconon is a drug prevention and rehabilitation program first devised by L. Ron Hubbard, founder of the Church of Scientology.

Dubious Science

The basis of Narconon's methodology and treatment is based off the research and theories of L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology's founder.

Much of Narconon's program focuses on "sweating out" drugs, via a regimen of running, saunas, and consumption of niacen. The regimen's scientific basis comes from Hubbard's mistaken assertion that all drugs are stored in body fat, and therefore over time poison the individual, even after one has stopped taking drugs.[1] In fact, even if most drugs were fat soluble, sweating excretes only trace amounts of what the body consumes, and the amount of toxins it excretes is quantitatively irrelevant.[2]

Controversies surrounding implementation

In 2003, an attempt by Nevada Assemblywoman Sharron Angle(R) to have a Narconon related drug program implemented in state prisons failed, after opposition from the Democratic Majority.[3]

In 2004, Narconon was put on probation in San Francisco school district, pending a probe, due to complaints about its scientific validity and its links to Scientology.[4]

Also in 2004, it was alleged that a rape had occured at a California Narconon facility.[5]
