Biographical Information

"Eldest son of Orascom-empire patriarch, Onsi Sawiris, solidified his reputation this year as one of the region's gutsiest businessmen. His new holding company, Weather Investments, owns Italian telecom company Wind and Greek telecom company TIM Hellas, as well as a controlling stake in Orascom Telecom. It is poised for a major public offering, if his highly leveraged foray into the European telecom market goes according to plan. With Emirati billionaire Majid Al Futtaim, recently launched a private equity fund focused on investments in Egypt. " [1]

"He is also chairman of a number of Egyptian companies including: the Egyptian Company for Mobile Services; commonly referred to as MobiNil; LINKdotNET Holding; Orascom Technologies; Orascom Telecom Algérie; Orascom Telecom WiMAX; and Weather Investments where he is also CEO.

"In addition, Sawiris is chairman of the board of Wind Telecomunicazioni of Italy, and member of the board of directors of Hutchison Telecommunications International and Smart Village Company.

"Moreover, Sawiris is a member of the International Advisory Committee to the New York Stock Exchange board of directors. Sawiris has been appointed to jointly chair the Italian-Egyptian Business Council for the 2006-2007 year. He is also a member of both the board of trustees and the board of directors of the Arab Thought Foundation; member of the board of trustees and head of the Financial Committee of the French University in Cairo; board member of the Egyptian Council for Foreign Affairs, the Consumer Rights Protection Association and the Cancer Society of Egypt." His brother is Nassef Onsi Sawiris.
