McCahill is currently the president of the SUV Owners of America (SUVOA), a lobbyist and advocacy group funded and directed by the transportation industry.

According to a January 24, 2004 SUVOA press release, McCahill served at the center of federal transportation policy under six NHTSA Administrators and eight Secretaries of Transportation. He retired in 1996 as Acting Director of NHTSA's Office of Public & Consumer Affairs.
