Manfred Korner was with the German Tobacco Manufacturers' Association and was the industry's INFOTAB representative in West Germany. In 1992, Korner wrote in article in the tobacco trade publication Tobacco International saying that "Substances like tobacco, coffee, tea, and spirits play an important role in improving the state of mind, and easing stress, and therefore benefit one's health." Korner promoted the industry-funded and organized group Associates for Research into the Science of Enjoyment (ARISE), which asserted that tobacco was important to good health because it relieves stress and helps people relax.[1]
