Mahmoud “El-Farouni” Initially a member of the Wafd party from 1996 to 1999, Mahmoud became a member of the then recently established “Hizb Masr El-Omm” in 2002, though the party was later rejected by the Political Parties Affairs Committee... "In 2004, Mahmoud joined the Kefaya Movement in order to participate in demonstrations against what he believes is a dictatorial regime. He has worked with civil society organizations such as El Kilma Center for Human Rights, the Justice and Citizenship Center for Human Rights, Free Media Union (FMU), the Egyptian Union of Liberal Youth, as well as the Egyptians against Discrimination movement. From 2007 to 2009, he worked as a coordinator and lecturer for “Grass Roots of Democracy,” a project of the Ibn Khaldoun Center for Development Studies. As the coordinator for the Assiut Governorate at the Ibn Khaldoun Center, Mahmoud also monitored presidential, parliamentary, Shura council, municipal and constitutional amendment elections... "Like many political activists in Egypt, Mahmoud has been detained in prison without charge numerous times, often for two or three days at a time. Presently, he is working to establish a new liberal, secular party, El Hizb el Masri el Liberali (the Liberal Egyptian Party)."
