In January 2007, California’s governor set guidelines to fight global warming by reducing the carbon intensity of the state’s transportation fuels by at least 10 percent by 2020. These guidelines, collectively called the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS), could force oil companies to reduce the carbon content of fuels they produce through a set of rules now being developed by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
