Liberal Party of Canada

The Liberal Party of Canada governed Canada between 1993 and 2006. The Liberal Party was led by Prime Minister Jean Chretien from 1993 until his retirement in 2003. In the Canadian federal election, 2004, the Liberals retained power but were reduced to a minority government status under new leader Paul Martin, Jr., in part because of the Liberal sponsorship scandal in which up to a hundred million dollars Canadian were apparently mis-spent with Liberal-friendly ad agencies in Quebec.

On January 23, 2006 the Conservatives won 124 seats, compared to 103 for the Liberal Party of Canada. On February 6, the Conservative leader, Stephen Harper, was sworn in as the 22nd Prime Minister of Canada, along with his Cabinet.
