"Prior to his appointment as Ambassador to Mongolia, he served as Counselor for International Development at the US Mission to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium. Previously, he served as USAID Mission Director in Pakistan, Cambodia and Mongolia and as USAID Program Officer in Jordan, Kazakhstan, South Africa and Yemen. Prior to joining USAID in 1984, he also worked briefly at the World Bank, Macon Telegraph and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

"During his various overseas assignments, Addleton served on international school boards in Amman, Ulaanbaatar and Phnom Penh. He is a life member of the Mongolia Society and the Nature Conservancy and a charter member of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. He has written a number of books and articles on Asia, including Some Far and Distant Place (University of Georgia Press) and Undermining the Center (Oxford University Press).

"Addleton has a PhD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a BS from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. He speaks Urdu and Hindi and has studied Mongolian, Russian, French, and Arabic. He was born and raised in Pakistan where his parents served for more than 30 years as missionaries." [1] He completed his PhD in 1991 ("Undermining the center : the Middle East migration and economic development in Pakistan, 1971-1988").

Previously, he served as USAID Mission Director in Pakistan (2006-2007), Cambodia (2004-2006) and Mongolia (2001-2004). Prior to that, he served as USAID Program Officer in Jordan, Kazakhstan, South Africa and Yemen.
