John J. Byrne
John J. Byrne "has previously served as a Director of Overstock from October 1999 to October 2002 and from April 2004 to July 2006, and as Chairman of the Board from October 2005 to July 2006. Mr. Byrne served as Chairman of the Board of White Mountains Insurance Group, Ltd., a financial services holding company, from 1985 to 2003, and from 2005 to 2006, and was its Chief Executive Officer and President from 1985 until his first retirement in 1997, and then served as Chief Executive Officer again from 2000 to December 2002. Prior to that he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GEICO from 1976 to 1985. Earlier in his career, Mr. Byrne spent eight years with the Travelers Insurance Companies, most recently as Executive Vice President. Mr. Byrne has also served as a director of American Express Company, Martin Marietta Corporation, Lehman Brothers, Inc., MidOcean Group of Companies, Zurich Re, Terra Nova (Bermuda) Holdings, Integro, and OneBeacon Insurance Group. Mr. Byrne has served as an Overseer of the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration of Dartmouth College and of the Rutgers University Foundation and was a member of the Stanford Graduate School of Business Advisory Council and of the Stanford Research Institute Advisory Council. Mr. Byrne has a Bachelor of Science from Rutgers University, a graduate degree in Mathematics from the University of Michigan and is a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. In 2009, Mr. Byrne was elected to the International Insurance Hall of Fame." [1]
