John E. Cookman was a retired senior vice president, chief financial officer and former member of the board of directors of Philip Morris Incorporated. He died at the age of 72 in August, 1982 in Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, Plattsburgh, N.Y.
Biography
Mr.Cookman retired from Philip Morris (PM) in October 1974. He was a member of the board of directors from 1963 to 1978 and was a director emeritus from 1977 to 1981. At the time of his death, he was a member of Philip Morris' advisory board and served as a consultant to the company. He was also chairman of the board of Mission Viejo Company, a real estate and land development subsidiary of PM. From 1969-1974 Mr. Cookman was a member of the board of the Miller Brewing Company, also a subsidiary of PM, Inc. Mr .Cookman joined Philip Morris Incorporated in 1954 when the company acquired the cigarette brand Benson & Hedges. He was named vice president in charge of organization, planning and control. In June 1958, he was appointed vice president in charge of diversification. He was named treasurer in 1960, chief financial officer in 1967, and senior vice president in 1970. [1]
