Biographical Information

Jerzy Pomianowski has been the Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Poland since 1 July 2011. "In the years 2008–2011, he worked at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as Director of the Partnership for Democratic Governance, an international initiative (OECD/UNDP) aimed at supporting public administrations in countries destabilized by armed conflict or natural disasters.

"He is a professional diplomat (holding the rank of Ambassador) and has been on the staff of the Ministry since 1991. Since that time he has held the following positions: Deputy Director of the Department of Asia, Africa, Australia and Oceania; then Director of the Department for five years (1992-1997); in 1997-2002, he served as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to Japan; upon his return, he headed the Commission of Public Procurement in the Department of Promotion (2003-2004).

"From 2004 to 2005, he chaired the Preparatory Committee of the III Summit of the Council of Europe in Warsaw and simultaneously chaired the Drafting Committee of the Summit’s Political Declaration, a crucial document defining the political mandate of the Council of Europe.

"From 2005 to 2006, he was Director General of the Foreign Service and then Director of the Department of Development Cooperation and Coordinator of the Polish Development Aid Program.

"Prior to joining MFA, he worked as a senior expert on non-public schools in the Cabinet of the Minister of Education (1990-1991). Previously, he was an academic lecturer at the University of Warsaw and an expert at UNESCO, working in Sri Lanka in 1988.

"From 1980 to 1989, he was an active member of the democratic opposition in Poland: he was a member of the board of Independent Students’ Association and the co-founder and head of the independent publishing house “Student Publishing House SOWA-NZS”. He graduated from the University of Warsaw, majoring in Sociology (1987)." [1]
