Philip Morris sought appearances of popular celebrities at Marlboro racing and Virginia Slims Tennis events, invited them to attend these events and highlighted their presence at these events to increase the public profile of the sponsored cigarette brands. [1][2] Similarly, ads for cigarettes were frequently placed near stories about popular celebrities in magazines.[3]
