James ("jim") Charles was the Director of Research & Development for Philip Morris at the Richmond laboratories outside New York. He worked under [[Thomas S Osdene][, the long-term scientific executive in the company, who ran both the genuine research and development (mainly the ingredients and flavours) in their cigarette tobacco; the genuine research which attempted to identify the chemical components of cigarette smoke which created the health hazards, and he also worked with Science & Technology division and the Corporate Affairs division in designing scientific distortion messages and recruiting academics willing to sell out their principles for money.
