Instruments of evil

During his October 17, 2001, Remarks Military Personnel at Travis Air Force Base, California, President George W. Bush said:

  • "The victims of September 11th were innocent, and this nation will never forget them. The men and women who murdered them were instruments of evil, and they have died in vain. This nation is strong. This nation is united. This nation is resolved. This nation will defeat terror wherever we find it across the globe."

On October 11, 2002, in remarks made at the Pentagon at the U.S. Department of Defense's service of remembrance, President Bush used the phrase once again:

  • "The hijackers were instruments of evil who died in vain. Behind them is a cult of evil which seeks to harm the innocent and thrives on human suffering. Theirs is the worst kind of cruelty, the cruelty that is fed, not weakened, by tears. Theirs is the worst kind of violence, pure malice, while daring to claim the authority of God. We cannot fully understand the designs and power of evil. It is enough to know that evil, like goodness, exists. And in the terrorists, evil has found a willing servant."

The Bible, depending upon the translation or version, is full of references to "instruments of evil." In the book of Revelation, Chapter 13, we find mention of Satan's instruments of evil, which are named as "the two beasts."[1].

In his Synopsis of the 'New Testament' , John Darby writes: "In chapter 13 we have the clear and full development of Satan's instruments of evil. ... But the beast had names of blasphemy. It was the open enemy of God and His Christ. It absorbed the previous empires and represented them. The dragon, Satan's direct power in the form of the heathen Roman Empire, gave his throne and power to this new beast. It was not of God. God owned no power on the earth now the assembly was gone, till He took His own. The earth was at war with Him. ... Human resistance by force was not the path of obedience."
